David hails originally from Milwaukee, WI. He attended college at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, where he met his wife, Carissa (Mankato, MN). While there, David majored in religion and English, and minored in music. Following college, David took a year to tutor Kindergarten through 3rd-graders in reading in Waseca, MN. After that year, Carissa finished college, and six days later, they married. Later that summer, they both began seminary at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL (just north of Chicago), a school affiliated with the United Methodist Church. David took the requisite courses in Presbyterianism from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. In his three years there, besides coursework, David busied himself with three internships – one at Northwestern University’s Alice Millar Chapel, one in Milwaukee at Calvary Presbyterian Church and Christ Presbyterian Church, and a final one at North Shore University Hospital in Evanston, serving as a chaplain. After graduating in May of 2013, David began here at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Marion. David’s wife Carissa works as the English as a Second Language teacher both in Marion and in neighboring Parker. Their first child, Ezekiel, was born in March of 2016. They, along with their border collie Willie, live in the church’s manse at 502 S Main Ave.
In addition to serving as the pastor at Emmanuel, David serves on the Presbytery of South Dakota’s Congregational and Pastoral Care Ministry, on the Steering Committee at the PCUSA’s new church start in Harrisburg, on a Presbytery task force to reorganize the Presbytery, as the moderator of First Presbyterian Church in Avon, and as the moderator at First Presbyterian Church in Tyndall.
